My name is Valerie Rasmussen, and I am a Doula and Licensed Midwife Apprentice at Carolina Waterbirth in Simpsonville, SC.

Childbirth is one of the most profound experiences in a woman’s life, and each time I am chosen to attend a birth, I feel so deeply honored to witness this process!

In 2003 I gave birth to my daughter naturally (with no medication or medical interventions). My husband, mom, and midwife helped me through the difficult spots with their loving support. They gave me the gentle encouragement I needed to take charge of my birth experience and make it what I wanted it to be. It is because of that experience that I am passionate about providing laboring mothers with the comfort, compassion, and support they need to achieve their best birth experience.

Our son came to us (in 2007) as a seven-month-old foster child, and has been a happy and crucial part of our family ever since. We are very happily pursuing the private matter of adoption. My experience with fostering and adoption has taught me many things about babies, parents, and human beings in general, and I know these things will help me to be an even better midwife and doula for my clients.

I believe that every woman deserves easy access to the information and resources she needs to obtain the highest quality perinatal care, and I will always do my best to connect families to the sources of education and/or assistance that they need most.

I realize the importance of honoring the choices parents make for themselves and their children. This is your birth, and you can expect that I will do my best to see that it happens your way.
